The Mill at Ballydugan

Ballydugan Mill was constructed outside Downpatrick, Co. Down, in 1792 and was considered an engineering marvel with eight floors (six storeys and two in attic) producing flour, bran and starch.

The Mill contained four pairs of stones and had the ability to be powered by water, wind and steam. The main building is roofed in Bangor Blue slates and was constructed in Silurian rubble masonry, roughcast and has a cut stone eaves course.

Having lain derelict for 125 years, the Mill was bought in 1987 by it’s current owner, Mr. Noel Killen. Albert Fry Associates are proud to have been associated as conservation engineers since that date with the refurbishment, re-ordering and extension of the Mill and associated properties restoring it to it’s former splendor incorporating a cafe, restaurant, 22 en-suite bedrooms and a wedding venue. Key to this success has been AFA’s and Noel’s joint understanding of and commitment to the requirements of NIEA’s HED and a detailed knowledge of 18th century construction details and techniques.
