Gaelscoil na gCrann Primary School

AFA contributed to the “design and construction” of a new seven class primary school and single unit nursery for the Trustees of Gaelscoil na gCrann Primary School to replace the existing school premises located at Dún Uladh, Balinamullan, Omagh.

The phased approach to the scheme delivery involved the demolition and removal off site of existing school facilities, modular buildings, building services installations, hard surfacing, fencing and walls and play equipment. The newbuild accommodation was designed strictly in accordance with the DENI Handbooks for Primary schools, Nursery Schools and School Meals Accommodation. A BREEAM rating of Excellent was achieved.

The contract was an NEC3 Engineering and Construction Contract Option A awarded on a two-stage approach i.e. finalisation of the detailed design and construction.

The new site, whose topography rose gradually to its centre where the new school building is placed, was bounded by the Drumnakilly Rd to the north, by the Farmhill Road to the west and by predominantly agricultural lands to the east. This topography dictated significant earthworks to achieve a balanced cut/fill exercise. The new buildings are of a single storey loadbearing masonry construction with pitched slate roof. The entrances of both the primary school and the nursery are north facing, orientated towards the site entrance whilst the classrooms themselves enjoy a southerly aspect overlooking the designated play areas.
