Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Greencastle

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, is the State Agency set up to promote the sustainable development of the seafood sector.  Their mission is to grow a thriving Irish seafood industry, expand the raw material base, add value and develop efficient supply chains that together deliver on the Government’s strategy for the seafood sector. As part of this mandate, BIM are the primary training body for fishermen in Ireland.  Training is provided at dedicated colleges in Greencastle, Co. Donegal and Castletownbere, Co. Cork.

As part of a major development planned for the National Fisheries College at Greencastle, called the Greencastle Sea Survival Training Centre/SSTC, BIM appointed MPA Architects and AFA consulting civil and structural engineers in 2016 to prepare the design and tender documents of the SSTC from inception/planning to detailed design and contract documentation.

The Greencastle Sea Survival Training Centre specification was to deliver a state of the art Sea Survival Training pool being built to provide realistic training to fishermen in personal survival techniques. Specifically, it was designed, in addition to classrooms, to included a 15 x 10 x 5 metre deep freshwater sea survival simulation training pool with an elevated jumping platform, a wave making machine, a water spray unit, fans to provide high winds across the pool surface.
